The Sonic concept originated in Shawnee, Oklahoma in the early 1950s. Sonic restaurants operate in 27 states in the Bible Belt and Sun Belt. Under the slogan 'America's Drive-In,' a Sonic restaurant features fast service by roller-skating carhops and a limited menu of cooked-to-order items, including hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, tater tots, and onion rings, and a wide variety of soft drinks and frozen desserts. Company-owned restaurants averaged $702,000 a year in 1999 franchised restaurants took in about $842,000 each. For a number of years, Sonic has consistently maintained strong real sales growth and industry-leading customer frequency. The customer's order is delivered by a carhop usually within four minutes. At a typical Sonic Drive-In, the customer drives into one of 24 to 36 covered parking spaces and orders made-to-order food through an intercom speaker system. Sonic Drive-Ins offer made-to-order sandwiches and feature signature items such as Extra-Long Cheese Coneys, hand-battered onion rings, tater tots, and a variety of Frozen and Fountain Favorites, including cherry limeades, slushes, and a complete soft-serve dessert menu. For more than 40 years, Sonic has worked to build its dominant position in the drive-in restaurant business and create a franchise system that offers extraordinary entrepreneurial opportunities in the quick-service restaurant industry.
